New Mexico, August 2007
I took this road trip alone, which was obviously quite different from my previous trips. It was very spur of the moment, as in I just decided right then to leave. I choose to head towards New Mexico, and as I hadn't spent any time there at this point except through very uneventful Lordsburg on the way to and from Texas.
As accustomary, I left in the middle of the night. I ended up sleeping a few hours in my car outside a gas station in Las Cruces and headed off just in time to see the sunrise over the mountains. Soon after I pulled over to photograph some brilliant early morning haze and saw a herd of horses down in the valley.
I climbed down off the turn off and photographed them and then headed off towards White Sands National Park. The park was amazing, and a lot more beautiful than I expected. I spent time there taking a handful of pictures and then drove off to the actual Missile Range, which has a museum your allowed to visit if you're not a terrorist. There, I saw a rare weather balloon, I think it said its one of the only ones left persevered I also saw the Fat Man bomb casing, which I would later see again at the Trinity Site. All in all it was a very good trip, even though I spent the entire time looking for Oryx that never seemed to materalise.
I give New Mexico 10/10. If I didn't live in Arizona, or Colorado, I'd live in New Mexico. Or England.
